Environmental Factors Question from CRC

Jitesh, I strugged between choices b and c becasue the correct answer does not align with the SPM wording. Pg. 30 of SPM cites "cultural diversity" and an EEF. How in your opinion did the writer of this question deliberately confuse the PgMP aspirant? It make no sense to me. Just venting with hope the real exam is more precise in the answer options. Darryl

You are pleased to be the first program manager in your company to manage a virtual team. While the company has managed programs for several years, in the past, it tended to hire subject matter experts or ask people from its offices in four other continents to meet in one place in order to work as a collocated team. It also relied extensively on contactor support. Finally, your executives have recognized that it will be cost beneficial to use a virtual team for your new program to develop a new product that combines the capabilities of a smart phone, an eBook reader, and a tablet in a single device that is less expensive with a higher quality of resolution than possible with the existing products on the marketplace. Such an approach is one in which you should consider:
a.  Using focus groups to obtain a picture of the various attitudes of your stakeholders
b.  The cultural backgrounds of the team members
c.  Changing culture
d.  Using market analysis

after reflecting on this question I realize that it is not addressing an EEF, rather the organization is undergoing a cultural change from co-located to virtual teams. Is this correct?

Darryl,

First question is what is, "Such an approach" in last statement. It is not about the gadget used and other things mentioned in scenario, but more about the overall approach and the underlying organisational change going to a virtual team structure. If so, then for the approach what should you consider best from the given alternatives?

You should consider understanding attitudes of various stakeholders anyway. There is nothing specific about this approach that makes it special. Also using specifically focus group for this cause, is being too specific.

For the approach of going to virtual teams, you may or may not consider undersatnding the cultural background of the team members. We need good reasoning for it. In this specific case, there is no strong reason to believe that cultural background may pose a greater risk of any sort.

Making the teams to work virtually through the use of technology and that too doing the first time is an organisational culture change. Something that teams may not be used to. (note that here mention is not of the team member cultures, but it is about organisational culture). So you should consider how you can smoothly deploy this organisational culture change. Change in way of working with each other and collaborating.

This question has nothing to do with market analysis to deploy the approach.

Hence, C is a better choice.

Regards,

Jitesh
